VAIL FILM FESTIVAL 2005 TO INCLUDE OSCAR® SHORTS SHOWCASE
Vail, CO — The Vail Film Institute announced today the addition of an Oscar® Shorts Showcase to the 2005 Vail Film Festival, to be held March 31 – April 3, 2005, in Vail, CO.
The Vail Film Festival is proud to be showing the 2005 Oscar®-winning shorts Ryan and WASP as part of the Oscar® Shorts Showcase. The showcase also features four additional shorts nominated for this year's Academy Awards.
Ryan, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Animated), was directed by Chris Landreth and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. The film is based on the life of Canadian animation pioneer Ryan Larkin and is told through strange, broken and disembodied 3D-generated characters. Larkin is now a panhandler in Montreal after years of drug and alcohol abuse.
WASP, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Short Film (Live Action), was directed by Andrea Arnold. Set in South East London, the film tells the story of Zoe, a 23-year-old single mother of four children. A chance meeting with an old flame offers her a temporary escape from her bleak life, as she attempts to juggle her responsibilities to her children with her yearning for romance.
The Vail Film Festival's Oscar Shorts Showcase will also feature 2005 Best Short Film (Live Action) nominees Little Terrorist, directed by Ashvin Kumar, and 7:35 in the Morning, directed by Nacho Vigalondo. Little Terrorist is about a young Pakistani boy who accidentally crosses the mine-strewn border into India in pursuit of his cricket ball. In 7:35 in the Morning, a woman enters the café where she has breakfast every morning and finds all the other diners staring at their plates in silence. From the Best Short Film (Animated) category, the showcase includes this year's nominees Guard Dog, directed by Bill Plympton, and Gopher Broke, directed by Jeff Fowler.
